Goemkars !

WORLD GOA DAY , is a day when Goans, Goan institutions and social
organizations all over the World plan activities that relate to their Goan
Cultural Heritage these celebrations are held
to reinvigorate in us, our families and our friends - our Cultural Heritage,
echoing what many Goans say "I was born a Goan and will die a Goan". A
true Goan in life as well as in death !

Let's not forget that a community without a language of its own becomes a
pariah community. The Goans have a very rich language and the only Indian
language written in Roman script. It
is our special heritage.

The Goan Community in Dar es Salaam under the leadership of Savio Fernandes
have lived up to the saying -

** A true Goan in Life as well as in death ! **

Thanks to the Goans in Dar es Salaam ( The place of birth ) , thank you all for
your support and expressing your SOLIDARITY with Goans world wide.

TOGETHER WE HAVE MADE IT HAPPEN !

Chairman's Note

Celebrating Goa Day and the 117th Anniversary of the Goan Community of Tanzania
last month has been a memorable occasion as it provided us with an opportunity
to reflect on what it is to be a true Goan and to share this experience with
family and friends. It is during such occasion that Goans all over the world get
together in a bid to maintain Goan unity and solidarity and to establish our
unique Heritage in many different ways.

It is in this connection that we salute Rene Barretto , a Dar es salaam Goan ,
now based in London, for the great initiative he has taken in bringing Goans
around the world together to celebrate Goa Day every year.

Celebrating Goa Day on a grand scale with singing , dancing and merry making is
one thing , but more than that we should make sure that we do not overlook the
helpless, the disabled and the abandoned among us. How we address this aspect
of Goa Day will be a measure of the quakity of the Goans of Dar es salaam ; and
we must at all costs ensure that our mission to promote Goan Heritage and to
foster a caring community prevails.

This year our celebrations took on a twist we included a sports competition
between Bardezkars and Shashtikars brought to you jointly for the first time in
the history of our community by the management of St.Xaviers society and the
Dar es Salaam Institute. At first , there were some concern that such a
competition could bring out the worst in us due to the traditional intense
rivalry between the north and the suth of Goa. But all went well as our
sports-persons lived up to the theme of this event , namely "GOENKARARANCHEO
DHIRIO " which means Goan Unity, This was exactly i had predicted having lived
five of my best years in Goa and never having heard of bitter rivalary between
the two regions.

In this connection , my congratulations and thanks go to the team captains,
Jeff Homes and Janice White for Bardez and Diana & Diamond Carvalho for
Salcette.

Thank you to my committee for the hard work and sleepless nights put in by all
my team members over the last couple of weeks, Leslie , Brian, Mark , Angela ,
Aurena, Melwyn, Michelle, Edgar, Vanessa, Serena, Gabriel, David, Desmond &Tina
- THANK YOU VERY MUCH INDEED,

While we approach the end of our second term in office my committee , with the
full backing of the Youth , have done some marvelous work for our community ,
both on the social and cultural side, as well as on the welfare side through
which we have reached out to help the sick and the less privileged members of
our community, please keep in mind that, if you feel that there is any Goan who
is need of any assistance , contact the Welfare Committee on our *fast-track*
pro-gramme. I would like to reach our to every Goan in Tanzania who requires
our help or financial assistance. Please come forward & approach me or our
Welfare -in-charge Brian and his assistant Aurena.

The count down begins for our grand 50thAnniversary celebration of our
institute.
