Making your 'dream wedding' possible

Kudos to the Herald for getting its front page editorial "Tackle
Terrorists with Iron Hand" spot on. Those who spoke out against
extremism by Right- wing Hindu outfits were often accused of being
anti-Hindu or pseudo-secular. I wonder what the sympathizers of such
groups will have to say now; now that the ugly face of one such
orthodox Hindu group, the Sanatan Saunstha is out in the open; now
that their skeletons are tumbling out of the closet and the chickens
coming home to roost.

Had the Goa Government acted promptly earlier; and nipped the communal
practices and the menace posed by such groups in the bud, things would
not have come to pass this far now. A Chief Minister is supposed to be
a leader who firmly upholds the principles enshrined in the
Constitution. But Digamber with his “Please-all” policy did nothing
while Goa was slowly and steadily being turned into a communal
cauldron. He played the fiddle while the Sanatan were gradually
lighting the flames to destroy our beautiful state.

That Digamber Kamat has so far proved to be a spineless leader goes
without saying. Last year, during ‘IFFI 08’, when a handful of members
of the Sanatan Saunstha protested against the screening of Hussain’s
Award winning documentary Film “Through the eyes of the Painter”, the
Goa CM virtually crawled when he was expected to walk straight.
Buckling needlessly under their pressure, he directed the organizers
to withhold the screening of documentary, and had to do a turn-around
only after eminent personalities like Shyam Benegal and a few others
furiously protested against this decision. On various other occasions
too, the CM gave the kid-glove treatment to this radical group, the
most recent incident being when Goan Artist Subodh Kerkar was asked to
curtail his Ganesha exhibition.

Now that the complicity of this Hindu right-wing group is evident, now
that there is prima facie evidence of their involvement in the blasts
that were supposed to take off in 4 different locations with
intentions to create communal disturbances in the State, it remains to
be seen what kind of action the State will contemplate against this
group. All the top leaders of this Right-wing outfit need to be
detained for questioning. This must include the ‘Hindu Janajagruti
Samiti’ also, since this group too is nothing but an offshoot of the
Sanatan.

The more restrained the State is in tackling fundamentalist elements
of the society, the more aggressive these elements become. Will the
Government act firmly and boldly at least now, or will Digamber Kamat
act like a leader without a spine once again?

Please show some spine Mr. Digamber, or else fundamentalism will
prevail over secularism!

warm regards,
Sandeep
