COCK & BULL STORY
By: Bennet Paes

Mr. Sardinha might have unlocked horns with the Indian legislators for the
moment, but bullfights will be here to stay, as also cockfights. They have been
here for hundreds of years and will continue hereafter, if historians are to be
believed. And as far as betting is concerned, you could bet your last shirt on
what these historians say.

There are humans calling themselves custodians of “Animal Rights”. They see no
cruelty to animals when they relish a half-done beef stake, or a dish of
vindaloo on their dining tables, but so much hullabaloo about bullfights. They
don’t talk about cockfights as much, because cocks have given up crowing, with
“chicken-tikka” taking wings in every nook and corner of the country.

In addition to human “Animal Rightists”, there are also the animal “Animal
Rightists”. Or else, why are there no roof-top protests when a wild panther
pounces on a human being and tears him to pieces?

The only explanation I can arrive at is this: the latter follows the law of the
jungle, while Mr. Sardinha is trying to preserve an age old human tradition.
