Although the people of Bombay, Konkan and Vidharbha would like to free themselves from the clutches of the Maratha rule, it is unlikely the Marathas who dominate the politics in Maharashtra would agree to give statehood to Bombay, Konkan and Vidharbha.
Unlike the Marathas who are from the Warrior class the people of Bombay, Konkan and Vidharbha are not from the warrior class and are no match to challenge the dominance of the Marathas. All the people of Bombay, Konkan and Vidharbha can do is keep protesting democratically and strive hard to carve out separate states of Bombay, Konkan and Vidharbha and free themselves from the dominance of the Maratha rule. Who are the Marathas : The Marathas are natives of Pune, Nashik, Sangli, Kolhapur, Satara, Ahmednagar and Solapur districts. Out of the 9 crore population of Maharashtra 34% population consists of Marathas. The Marathas dominate the political arena in Maharashtra. Marathas have dominated the state politics of Maharashtra since its inception in 1960. The first Chief Minister of Maharashtra was a Maratha ( Yashwantrao Chavan). Since then, Maharashtra has witnessed heavy presence of Maratha community and having more than 50% of their members in the ministry, local municipal commissions, police force, panchayats, etc. Adrian S.
