                        Happy New Year Twenty-Ten

Goa is neither a transit point nor a drug producing state, but a victim state
and due to Golden Triangle, drug peddlers use it as a smuggling point, revealed
the Director General of Police, Mr Bhim Sain Bassi, on Wednesday morning.

Addressing the media, in the Maquinez Palace, Mr Bassi said, ``India is
sandwiched between the Gold Triangle and the Crescent, we are a victim nation.’’
“In Goa, due to high literacy rate and highly motivated non-government
organisations and police presence, our slums are not vulnerable to drugs.
Otherwise, you see slums are the most vulnerable spots for such things
elsewhere,” the DGP further said.
Mr Bassi also said that traps are laid and raids are conducted and added that
Goa is also not a hot target for drug peddlers.
Even Narcotics Control Bureau is not making big seizures in the state, he said.
Referring to Ketamine, the DGP said it is one of the schedule drug used by the
veterinary people but few are misusing the same.
The DGP further said that “we are not been able to reach the sharks in the drug
trade as there are cut-outs in between but our efforts are always there.”
He refused to endorse that the drugs were served or sold at the Sunburn party
at Candolim and added that our investigations revealed that no drugs were sold
at the party and stated that this is on the basis of investigations.
When his attention was drawn towards charge of the local MLA, Mr Agnelo
Fernandes, he said that he should have informed us about the incident as a
public figure and added that nobody was prohibited from conducting raids and
nothing is unusual about the party in Goa.
Earlier, the Superintendent of Police, Special Cell, Mr Atmaram Deshpande told
‘The Navhind Times’ that drugs are coming to the state and because of this Anti
Narcotics Cell and Customs and Central Excise and others make seizures and
arrests.
“In the recent past, the ANC had arrested a local resident and had seized from
his possession contraband drugs Ecstasy and MDMA, of course in small quantity
and of less value but our department is active,” he informed.
When his attention was drawn to the party organised at Candolim, he said
“neither I deny that drugs were brought in for personal consumption by the
revelers, who attended the party, nor I confirm that the drugs were made
available inside.”
Mr Deshpande said that the police had asked for the close circuit television
footage from the organizers to verify and footage is yet to reach.
To a query on the girl from Noida in Delhi, who collapsed at the party and
later died, he replied “cause of her death is yet to be made public by the
doctors at the GMC. They have kept the verdict reserved.”
He also said that after the post mortem examination, viscera had been sent to a
forensic labouratory for chemical analysis and reports are expected within
15-days of its dispatch.
Mr Deshpande also said that sufficient number of policemen were posted at the
party site for providing security besides doing random checking for drugs and
added that it was very difficult to check each and every person entering the
venue.
