Goanet highlights by Selma Carvalho

If Colva village came to a
standstill during the festive
season, Goanet last week had
its own theatrical production.
Existential questions about who
is a Goan, are Non-Resident
Goans less Goan than Resident
Goans? Does citizenship have
anything to do with involvement
in Goa's affairs? Is Goan
Indian? All these topics were
discussed on Goanet in the
usual animated style.

Starting off the debate was Samir Kelekar who challenged the
extent to which Goa's own shock-jock, Rajan Parrikar, can
become involved in the affairs of Goa if he had discarded the
most fundamental right bestowed on an individual:

In defense of Rajan Parrikar, Dr Anil Desai had a rebuttal:

Let it not be said that only saffronites, former or current,
come to the defense of Rajan Parrikar, because we Goans
seriously suffer from a Saviour-complex and so naturally
anyone to makes the loudest noise in cyberspace is hailed as
a Saviour while those who have quietly dedicated countless
hours in the service of Goa, such as the men and women of the
GBA, can be openly disgraced and rubbished without protest
from us. Are we gullible or just bodmas? Here are some views:

Dr Jose Colaco:

Arwin Mesquita:

Sometimes it takes the non-Goan, Rajan Narayan editor of Goan
Observer to stand up in defense of those who have marched a
revolution onto the streets of Goa, such as Dr Oscar Rebello:

This debate about citizenship soon spiraled into the
attitudes of Non-Resident Goans themselves. Did they have a
right to voice any opinions on the political, social and
economic problems plaguing Goa? It is said that Moidekars are
generally mad but was Moidekar Tony D'Sa, goaded into
writing an open letter to all NRS, because of the gratuitous
advice NRGs bestow onto resident Goans? Click here to read
his open letter.

Joining him from the neighbouring village of Saligao, where
bouts of madness may occasionally spread, was Frederick Noronha:

Mario Goveia, a regular conferor of advice and the
self-proclaimed advocate of truth and reason had a rebuttal:

Are non-resident Goans really plagued with a sense of guilt
and inadequacy as Tony and Frederick would have us believe?
Selma Carvalho had this to say:

But the bigger issue of just who is a Goan still remained.
Carmen Miranda, who is half-Spanish and Goan, shared her
views:

Jagdish Gangolly had an interesting definition of just who is
a Goan.

The issue of the controversial CD, Dogui Bodmas was
still a hot topic on Goanet. Vidyadhar Gadgil had
an incisive article in the Herald on freedom of
          expression in Goa.

Francis Rodrigues who writes a daily Grook on Goanet, wrote a
cheerful letter to Santa protesting the controversial CD.

JoeGoaUK posted the letter issued by the Archbishop of Goa in
response to the CD.

Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão felt the Archbisho's
response was too little too late.

Dr Oscar Rebello lists his 10 most influential
          Goans of the last decade:

Eminent author Mario Cabral E Sa bids a farewell to Duda:

Wendell Rodrigues may be India's most prominent haute
couture designer but apparently he's also a dab hand in the
kitchen. Here he shares his Aunty Veronica's sardine
recipe.

Author Dominic Fernandes elaborates on Miraculous Crosses:

Selma Carvalho writes about the lives Goan Tarvottis lead on
the high seas:

The Menezes-Braganza family is perhaps one of Goa's most
illustrious families. Their ancestral home in Chandor has
been lovingly restored to its former glory and is now open to
visitors. A fascinating article on the House of Chandor, sent
in by Samir Kelekar.

And finally enjoy a bout of nostalgia as by Ramnath Pai
Raikar as the 1960 batch of the Liceu Nacional Afonso de
Albuquerque meet up and reminisce.
