PIL in HC over ill-equipped ferries HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, JAN 18
While the residents of various islands in the State have been complaining that ferry service provided by the River Navigation Department (RND) is not satisfactory, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been now filed before the High Court highlighting the grievance.
A PIL filed by Abhay Raikar came up for hearing before the Division Bench of Justices Naresh H Patil and N A Britto Monday morning.
His main complaint is that ferry boats are not properly maintained and also ferries are not equipped with life saving emergency equipment and so, safety of passengers is overlooked.
He further complaints that ferry timings are changed without any warnings, whereas sometimes ferries are cancelled causing in convenience to passengers.
The hearing was adjourned after two weeks as there is another similar petition pending before the High Court and the government had sought extension of time to file its reply in the petition.
