Thanks for the interesting Moira the truth (The moidecars version) On the subject of re-alignment of the Church. Did any one find out who stole the 'kamli' of the 'Moidekars?' while they were busy pushing the church wall to have it 'aligned'? And did the other villagers agree that the church was 'realigned?' A similar bizarre story was told by my grandfather, regarding realignment in the similar way somewhere in the Kanara region. It seems the church was built by the (considered not so bright) de Gama family. Only the Kambli was replaced by shirts of those days (probably called 'khomis'). On finding the church not aligned, they removed their shirts and kept at one corner of the church and all gathered at the other end of the church wall to realign it by pushing. It so happened, some one stole the shirts and the poor Gamas after their pushing effort, discovered that the shirts were missing and thought that the shirts went under the church. And they rejoiced, the re-aligned the church!! and went home shirtless, but happy!! This was told in about 1970 and my grandpa was about near 70 then!! I only hope that 'relieve themselves' meant #1 (you know what I mean). And the 'mirounchem' by some and gossip about that (shall I say grapevine) is rampant and was and is an open secret and not necessarily confined to any particular village or community, I believe. Surprisingly the men involved get scott free! But 'Moidekaars' must be quite brave to spread the 'fish manure'..as it really stinks (no fun intended), but in their determination to complete the church they took lot of trouble and inconvenience, which is appreciated. Those days parishioners used to do voluntary (free) service in addition to financial assistance to build their churches. MD.
