First of all Mr Barve, Kuwait is not Qatar. They are two separate states. So
let's at least get our geography right, if we can't get our historical heritage
quite right. I've been to Qatar. One desolate, God forsaken corner of the
earth; lonely, spartan Arabesque buildings rising out of salt-flats. No human
on earth would take its citizenship unless it is a sort of self-imposed
incarceration akin to being exiled to Siberia. That is what we Indians have
sentenced Hussain to, our most eminent artist, to live in Qatar. He could have
taken the citizenship of any other country. I'm quite sure a heaving Dubai
would have offered it to him, but I have little doubt that at 91, all this man
wants is peace and escape from the world. There is a brilliant line in Amitav
Ghosh's novel the Glass Palace when the king of Burma is exiled by the British
to live in Ratnagiri, India. He took his hour-glass with him and there he knew
he would be buried watching its sand
shift.
I hope that in some way pleases you.
Best,
Selma
