Recent reports on Vaddem Lake Contamination beg the question; why are the people acting only now? Forget about the short sighted, in-competent ruling politicians that Goans have elected; who too busy fighting for political power or consolidating their financial positions. Surely the people of Vaddem should have seen this coming a long time back with the gross illegalities & corruption, facilitating the destruction/contamination of the area. It draws similarity with my village Colva, where contamination today has reached serious levels; a few spirited local activists were warning of this years back and fighting un-necessary developments that were threatening (destroying) the village but most of villagers of Colva were too susegad to act or in-compliance with the destruction of the village; and as for the Non Resident Goans, barring a few giving back to Colva, most of the Colva Residents abroad were too busy ONLY having their social events, dances, football matches, entertaining MLA's, flaunting their wealth etc!! Many Colva residents were even criticisng/attacking the activists on the grounds of having vested interests; we can all see the facts in Colva today!! Do we act only when it is too late or when the problem reaches our own door step? The question now is basically of the survival of Goa, Goans & our identity. Let’s act today and not wake up only when it’s too late!!
