Reading thro' the letters to editor in today's newspapers regarding the passing of the death sentence on Ajmal Kasab, I tend to agree with Anand Madgavkar [Herald/Goan Observer] that such things are not celebrated but solemnly accepted as justice done towards the crime committed. There is nothing to celebrate about. In fact it is a sad day that things like the crime that Kasab committed and the 'hang unto death' judgment passed has come to pass in this modern, civilized society. But even sterner judgments are required in order to curb the fanatic understanding that if one gives his/her own life in taking away hundreds of other's for a cause totally absurd and unknown, one is likely to be rewarded in many ways in heaven by the Almighty God.

My brother has come down to Goa today from Mumbai for a couple of days to see our mother who is bed-ridden at 88. And we got to talking about the main news in the papers today about Ajmal Kasab getting the hanging rap. And what surprised me was my brother saying that he is totally not satisfied with the hanging unto death sentence. "It is too mild and a very easy way out for Kasab", he said.

I disagreed with him asking him if he would prefer having Kasab lined up against the dead wall and pumped with a hundred bullets, like they did it to the President of Rumania Nikolae Causescu through a firing squad.

"No", he said. "That too is a sort of easy way out". "If I were Justice M L Tahaliyani, I would have handed out a sentence that was the most cruel - HANGED - DRAWN AND QUARTERED."

In all these years of reading novels and books, I am no novice to that phrase. But I have never had the opportunity to find out what it actually meant. So I said to my brother. "Isn't it the same thing" l asked my brother.

"I had expected that you would know" he said. "It means, as the body is plunged and comes to the end of the rope, there is the executioner waiting with a knife who slits the chest open in one motion even as the body is in spasm, plucks out the beating heart with his bare hands, places it on the chopping block and cuts it into 4 quarters in a swift 'dak ..dak' motion".

Come to think of it, that all these years I had known the phrase but didn't know what it meant.

"Sure" I said. "I can't imagine anything more cruel than this".

Does not Kasab deserve it??? Perhaps the Supreme Court will know better.
And,
Perhaps our dear Remo must abandon the Arabian Sea mass drowning for our GOA politicians and solicit for a 'Kalejah fry' rave party instead.
:-))

It is not ENOUGH that GOOD, HONEST citizens contest elections.
It is not ENOUGH that GOOD, HONEST citizen voters elect good, honest representatives.
GOA urgently needs 'GOOD, HONEST, DISCIPLINED SYSTEM of GOVERNANCE'.
Wherein, even a dishonest person is forced to be good, honest n disciplined, or to QUIT.

Only through PPS can such 'good, honest n disciplined system of governance' be identified and accepted.

PPS GOA =PEOPLE for POLITICAL SANITY = PEOPLE'S POWER SYSTEM
