The chess activity centre, Taleigao along with the International Centre Goa, Dona Paula has come up with first of its kind concept of blindfold chess in Goa. The demo of the same was hosted at the International Centre, on Saturday. The president of the chess activity centre, Mr Srikant Barve said he often experiments to improve the concept of chess. This effort came into being when he thought of involving more spectators. “Usually chess game has few spectators. This is the first attempt to involve more spectators and a way to attract sponsors. Such effort will actually boost children and will also help them to improve their mind game at different levels,” explained Mr Barve. This game of blindfold chess does not play the way name hints. Mr Barve utters there is no blindfold tied to the player. Of the five players, three players play the game and the other two are held back for replacement. It is a thought processing concept and involves lot of visualisation. “In this game the player does the announcement of the move in alphabetic notations. A move writer accompanies the move announcer in penning down the notations. The move announcer imagines the pieces on the board and his announcement directs the third player to move the pieces on the board, not seen by the first player. The stop watch for each team is controlled by the third player in the game” explains Mr Barve. The rules for this game are set by Mr Barve. It states that the move announcer and the move writer can discuss the move but the final announcement has to be made by the move announcer itself. The two referees will supervise the game, Mr Barve reiterates. Mr Barve explains the objective of this game lies in visualization. This process of visualization trains the young minds and explores their creative side. Mr Barve is planning to promote this game in schools and now also preparing for a competition that would take place in the month of August. He adds this mind game won’t follow Swiss-league type of championship. The losers won’t be given second chance to play. Game comprising of three rounds will have pawn moves, pawn and king moves and moves of all the pieces. Total set time limit for the game would be for 20 minutes. Mr Barve said the set timing for the competition is sufficient to pressurize the players to visualize. “I have full confidence;” Mr Barve adds and continues “My concept will be accepted by the parents and children.” His vision for the new concept is to reach the International level and play with the international masters and grand masters. *(Registrations are open for all age groups.
