A. N. Nagvenkar is Gulab's  'Man of The Year'


Commissioner for NRI Affairs Eduardo Faleiro has said that the Sahitya Academy awards should be made available to eminent writers in Konkani whether they write in Romi, Devanagiri or Kannada scripts.

Faleiro was speaking at the Presentation Ceremony of Gulab awards organized by Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa Memorial Trust at the Grace Church Hall in Margao on July 20, 2010, on the 57th. birth anniversary of late Fr. Freddy J. da Costa, founder editor of Gulab.

The presitigious Gulab awards were presented to five eminent personalities. The Gulab 'Man of the Year - 2009' was presented to A N Nagvenkar, Chairman Ann Institute, Romi Writer of the year award to Felix P. da Cruz, Female singer of the Year to Roma Fernandes, Male singer of the year to Sidanath Buyao while Tiatrist of the Year award went to comedian Ambe.

Faleiro while congratulating Fausto V. da Costa, editor of Gulab, said that for the past about 50 years, Konkani is being taught only in the Devanagari script in all schools in Goa including Diocesan schools and even in the seminaries where catholic priests are trained. As a result, Faleiro said most Goans can now read Konkani in devanagiri script. Faleiro called upon the Catholic Church in Goa to circulate their written material during religious services in Konkani both in Romi and in devanagiri scripts.

Felix D'Cruz spoke on behalf of the awardees.

Fr. Conceicao Da Silva said that late Fr. Freddy was a dynamo of Konkani and worked tirelessly for the upliftment and promotion of the language. Guest of honour Domingo Araujo, President of Kala Mogi, Fr. Manuel Gomes and Prof. S M Borges, President and Secretary respectively of Fr. Freddy J. da Costa Memorial Trust also spoke on the occasion.

Editor of Gulab Shri Fausto da Costa earlier welcomed the guests while Marcos Gonsalves proposed vote of thanks.

Earlier creative writing workshop was organized which was conducted by Konkani writers Dr. Jayanti Naik and Guadalupe Dias.
