Mickky addresses Assembly demands arrest of Roy Naik
2010-07-28

Mickky Pacheco stood up in great dignity in the House and addressed the
Assembly and the people of Goa. He made his hurt felt at the injustice meted
out to him by the police at the behest of their boss, the Home Minister. He
demanded that as he was arrested without any evidence other than the
accusations of NGOs, so too should Roy Naik, son of Home Minister Ravi Naik,
be arrested immediately and taken into custody for custodial interrogation.

Pacheco accused the Chief Minister of speaking to his NCP supremo Sharad
Pawar and telling him that there was “clinching evidence” of Mickky’s guilt.
After Pacheco finished his address to the house, Chief Minister Digambar
Kamat stood up and categorically denied having spoken to Sharad Pawar or
anyone else in the NCP about Mickky Pacheco.

He opened his statement with pretty much the same information that he had
given to the Press a month ago, when he said that his friend, family friend
Nadia was in distress and he helped her monetarily as a friend, and he did
all in his power to save her life.

He took objection that the Crime Branch raided his house while he was
Minister without informing him. He was glad, he said, that they found
nothing. He accused the Chief Minister of telling the NCP chief that he had
clinching evidence of Mickky’s guilt in the case. He said if they had any
shred of evidence that he caused Nadia’s death in any way, they should
produce it, and he will resign instantly as MLA. If they cannot, he said,
the Chief Minister must make a statement of take action against the police
department.

Mickky said that there were other issues along with Nadia’s death, the drugs
nexus and the excise scam. He was the only minister who wrote a letter to
the CM asking him to hand over the Nadia case, the drugs nexus case and the
excise scam case to the CBI. As a citizen he said, he approached the
judiciary and when he lost in the Supreme Court he surrendered before the
state.

He said that he wanted to make a point. He had not committed any economical
offence but all his bank accounts were frozen and it looked like the police
wanted to put his family out on the street. He expressed particular hurt
over the Red Corner notices issued against him. “There are so many cases
from Central Government where there are people who have done many things,
committed many crimes, but no one had ever had a Red Corner notice put out
against them not only in the country, but internationally too,” said
Pacheco.

He demanded that Roy Naik son of Home Minister Ravi Naik be arrested. He
said only minority leaders have been arrested in this House. He pointed out
to Churchill Alemao who was behind bars for 6 months in all. Monserrate,
Joaquim Alemao. He said it was no coincidence that it was the same Home
Minister and the same police official who were common in all arrests. He
wanted the case to be thoroughly investigated.

The CM stood up and said that he was making a statement on record. He had
neither spoken to Sharad Pawar or anyone else from the NCP regarding Mickky
Pacheco.

*TARGET GOA* is of the considered opinion that if Mickky Pacheco had argued
his own case instead of letting his lawyers Palekar and Desai mess things up
for him. He would not have had to hide in a boat, or sleep in jail cells at
Calangute Police Station or one night at Sada, or alternate between hospital
bed and interrogation.
