The Indian tax payers have ended up paying through their nose and only
attracted global shame by hosting of the Common Wealth Games. The citizens of
this country do not understand that motives for hosting such international
events are far from show-casing the nation's capabilities but are meant to
benefit corporates, contractors and politicians. The same holds through for
other development like dams, national highways, and so on. Former Union Sports
Minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar was ridiculed by the media for opposing such
extravagant spending on a CWG and had urged the government to instead ultilise
that money for building sports infrastructure in the villages.
Indians now need to take a holiday from hosting international events until they
put their governance systems in place. With maggots, rats, cockroaches and
scorpions crawling all around the place in government, this country can only
hope for more international embarassment. A thorough criminal investigation
into the entire expenditures on the CWG is what is required after the
conclusion of the games. The guilty must be stringently penalised, as inviting
such ridicule is as good as betrayal of the nation.
