PONDA: In an accident reported at Usgao Tiska, four-year-old, Pritesh S Dharve
was run over and killed by a speeding mining truck, on Monday at around 11 a.m.
Upon news of the incident, the locals held a 6-hour rasta-roko at the site,
which was cleared only later in the evening by a strong police force.
Locals informed that moments after the boy and his grandfather alighted from a
bus, a speeding truck knocked them down and ran over the boy, who died on the
spot, while the 60-year-old grandfather suffered minor injuries.
Locals said that this is the first death reported during the mining season,
which began after the Ganesh festival.
A local woman commenting on the incident said, “People of these areas are
always taken for a ride by the politicians and the mining lobbies. While palms
of the police and other authorities are greased, what we get here is dust,
accidents and death.”
The locals alleged that the death of the minor was a result of negligence on
the part of the driver of the truck. What further angered the locals was the
fact that, when the boy was in the middle of the road in a pool of blood,
another two truck drivers tried to navigate their trucks by the side of the
dead child. The angry locals who had gathered at the site, immediately deflated
the tyres of these two trucks and beat the drivers. The truck that was involved
in the accident was also damaged by the locals.
The locals blocked the roads as a protest over the negligence of the truckers.
A few women squatted on tyres put up on the road to block the mining traffic,
till 5 p.m.
The DySP, Mr Serafin Dias, PI, Mr C L Patil, Mr Manoj Mardolkar, and traffic
PI, Mr Salim Shaikh were at the site monitoring the situation. The angry locals
ignored the warning and orders of the police personnel to clear the roads,
expressing that they are willing to be arrested. A few even walked to the
police bus; however, the ladies squatting on the tyres had to be physically
lifted and put in the bus. They were later released from the police station.
The body of the child was handed over to the relatives after the post mortem.
