What a poorly written piece, were the editors asleep or are they trying to promote a negative Goan stereotype? How does this nonsense find its way to newspaper pages and people blindly forward this crap when it does not pass the common sense test. You don't have to read past the first three sentences: QUOTE: "These statistics compiled by Alcoholic Anonymous may be a cause of concern for Goan society. If AA data is to be believed, approximately more than 45 per cent of Goans consume legal alcohol – way ahead of the Indian average of 25 per cent for other States. It is estimated that there might be about a lakh of alcoholics in Goa." UNQUOTE 1. Consumption of legal alcohol does NOT equal alcoholism (btw, consumption of ILLEGAL alcohol does NOT have anything directly to do with alcoholism either). 2. There are 14 lakh+ residents in Goa. Even if there were "about a lakh of alcoholics" that is not even close to 45%. Even if the reporter forgot to qualify it as a percentage of adults, the 45% is considerably overstated. Must have been a slow day at the newspaper for a filler piece like this. How about investigative reporting on corruption in Goa by the political/mining/builder nexus. Or the environmental degradation of Goa.
