MARGAO, NOV 10 These statistics compiled by Alcoholic Anonymous may be a cause of concern for Goan society. If AA data is to be believed, approximately more than 45 per cent of Goans consume legal alcohol – way ahead of the Indian average of 25 per cent for other States. It is estimated that there might be about a lakh of alcoholics in Goa. About 32 per cent of rural family income and 24 per cent of urban family income is spent on alcohol in India. === jc's comment === I do have concerns and questions wrt the above article. They are as follows: 1: Who is this 'unnamed' Herald Reporter? 2: What did the 'AA study' actually state? 3: How was the study conducted? 4: What is the meaning of the word 'alcoholic'? 5: If a person consumes (say) a glass of wine with his/her Sunday meal, does it make him an alcoholic? This Heraldo story is quite reminiscent of the Chagas da Silva/Frederick Noronha/ Times of India story based on bogus statistics and even more gerrymandered analysis of some years ago. Because of the pressure from those who questioned the validity of the study, the paper was "cleaned up" and later published in a journal. My post should not be taken as a support for the 'sweeping under the carpet' of alcoholism which is a major problem all over the world. It is only a word of protest against the displayed ignorance by so called journalists based in Goa.
