Police heartburn gets Sunburn off to delayed start
TNN, Dec 28, 2010, 04.10am IST

PANAJI: The sunburn festival got off to a delayed start on Monday as police allowed the organizers to begin the party only after they were satisfied that most of the conditions imposed by the state home department had been met by the organizers.

Police inspected the festival venue at Candolim to check that the conditions, including setting up of two police control rooms at the venue, had been met. "North Goa district officers, as well as officers of crime branch and anti-narcotics Cell (ANC) visited the venue and checked out the arrangements. The organizers had adhered to most of the conditions laid down by the government and things appeared to be in order. There were only 38 CCTVs in place at the venue in the afternoon, but they have promised to install another 12 by evening," a police official who was part of the inspection team said.

Also, 200 policemen from the North district have been posted inside the venue. "Of the 200 policemen inside the venue, 50% are armed personnel. We are not willing to take any chances with security," sources said.

While granting approval for the festival, the home department insisted that only 2,000 people at a time be allowed entry to the venue and 200 cops in uniform be posted within. Also the venue has been declared a 'no smoking zone'. Anyone wanting to light a cigarette would have to do so at a special smoking lounge at the venue which would be continuously monitored by the police.

The permission granted on December 23 is signed by under secretary home, G P Dangui with directions to the DGP to ensure necessary security arrangements and that law and order is maintained.

Authorities want to ensure there is no sale of drugs at the venue as the department was targeted last year after Meha Bahuguna, 23, of Bangalore, who was last seen partying at the festival, allegedly died of a drug overdose after consuming angel dust, a hallucinogenic drug. Also in the wake of intelligence inputs on suspected terrorist activity in the West coast during the Christmas and New Year season, following which the police have been put on alert, the state authorities are not willing to take any chances. So far 85 cases are booked under smoking and spitting at Sunburn festival.
