India has made steady progress against poverty. A look at the 25-year
period between 1981 and 2005 shows that India has moved from having 60
percent of its people living on less than $ 1.25 a day to 42 percent.
The number of people living below a dollar a day (2005 prices) has
also come down from 42 percent to 24 percent over the same period.
Both measures show that India has maintained even progress against
poverty since the 1980s, with the poverty rate declining at a little
under one percentage point per year.
COMMENT from an absolute non-economist who has just returned from a
delightful little walk in the snow:
I wonder if one can measure poverty in 1981 with poverty in 2005 based
on a static figure of $ 1:25 a day.
What can $1:25/day buy today (or could buy in 2005) compared with what
$1:25/day was able to buy in 1981?
If all one had available/day was $ 1:25, then hopefully, one could at
least buy a few onions (at today's prices) or perhaps, just pretend to
exist on some Navsagar mercifully 'adulterated' with adulterated
carrot juice.
What an existence IF some people can live in 20+ floor houses and wine
and dine other with champagne and fillet mignon ....and yet others are
told, "Your folks aren't doing too badly. In fact less of you are
below the official poverty line than some years ago".
Give me the Caste System any day ...over this fake democracy.

there is brilliant Sun in the sky and Snow on the ground at the same
time. Perhaps the snow is for those who are below the 'poverty' line.
