Over 11,000 attend VHP Ponda meet TNN, Jan 10, 2011, 04.24am IST PANAJI: Shouts of 'Jai Sri Ram' rang through the crowd overflowing from the white fencing put in place for the VHP's public meetingon the outskirts of Ponda city.
The Hindus gathered far outnumbered the 11,000 chairs arranged for the meeting and the excitement amongst the crowd was palpable as they poured into the venue much before the 5pm meeting was scheduled and exercised their vocal chords to the fullest when VHP activists encouraged slogans in favour of the Ram Mandir. Goa chief of the RSS, Subhash Velingkar, drew the largest cheers from the crowd when he went on to call Congress member of Parliament from South Goa, Francisco Sardinha a Portuguese dog. "When a Portuguese vessel came to Goa this year to mark their 450 years of cruelty in the state and the rape of our women by the colonizers, we protested and stopped the chief minister and even the governor from being a part of it. Only the MP from South Goa went like a traitor, a dog of the Portuguese." The meeting, which continued on Thursday, was held to review last year's plans and the resolutions passed by the party during the international board of directors' meeting held at Indore in MP. This year, VHP's international board of trustees' meeting has been slotted from January 7 to 9 in the precincts of the Shree Ramnath Mandir in Ramnathi, Ponda. Along with Sudarshan, the core committee meeting was attended by 40 trustees, including five international trustees, the VHP's international president Ashok Singhal and international general secretary Pravin Togadia. Singhal and Togadia arrived in Goa on Tuesday. After the meeting, Sudarshan left for Mumbai, said Dilip Dessai, a senior member of VHP, Goa. He added that several leaders, including Singhal and Togadia, would address the Mahadharmasabha (religious public meeting) to be held at the Goa Engineering College ground at Farmagudi on Sunday.
