Todays breathing Bethlehem is GAZA, where infants are born in tents illumined by candlelight, or amidst concrete rubble and twisted iron; where parents and elders huddle against walls riddled with large caliber bullet holes and shrapnel; where thirst is quenched by water contaminated with salt, toxic nitrates and raw sewage; where kings and heads of state fly gallantly overhead and their gifts and humanism barred from entry, and where, at any given moment, the sky can once again be studded with cluster bombs and white phosphorous.
A visit to this desecrated land would gladden the heart of the infant Jesus who was born next door, two millenniums ago.
