Talented youngsters Ajay Naik and Bhakti Pandit had to work hard before emerging triumphant in the Under 18 Boys and Girls Singles category respectively, at the GCCI Cup Talent Search All Goa Table Tennis Tournament organised by Panjim Table Tennis Club in association with Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Sports Authority of Goa.
In a fast paced spectacle played at the Indoor Stadium, Campal, Ajay Naik narrowly edged out Jude Menezes 12-10,11-4, 7-11, 7-11, 11-4, 7-11 and 11-4 in a nail-biting thriller. The Girls Under 18 Singles proved to be an equally exciting see-saw battle but in the end Bhakti Pandit showed better nerves and composure Arantxa Noronha, to pip her higher ranked opponent by a 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 6-11, 10-12, 11-5 and 11-9 scoreline. In the Under 12 category, Varun Naik shocked top seed Sidhant Sharma 11-7, 7-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6 in five tight sets to clinch the Boys title while Pranali Sonawane registered a comfortable 11-9, 12-10, 11-7 win over Deepali Desai to emerge triumphant in the Girls category. Meanwhile, In the Under 14 category, Anthony George played an attacking game to beat a gritty Sidhant Parekh 9-11, 11-3, 15-13, 11-7 to win the Boys crown while Sabia Shaikh smashed her way to a 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 win over Pranali Sonawane to clinch the Girls title. The club recorgnised the efforts of Coach Subhash Kolwalkar and players of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Peddem who put up a spectacular show in the Championship by winning in four events. Medals and Prizes were awarded to all the Winners and Runners-up. Third place prizes were awarded to Vaidik Srivastav, Akhil Kulkarni, Aditi Dharwadkar, Shanaya Javeri, Rutuj Sonawane Kevin Gonsalves, Sonabar Khan, Joel Andrade, Jophilip George, Laxmi Shetye and Padma Dharwadkar while Promising Player Prizes were awarded to Keziah Rebello, Aditya Kalro and Satya Vagmi. Shri Manguirish Raikar, Vice President of the GCCI, was the Chief Guest and distributed the prizes in the presence of Club Vice President Hilary Fernandes, Advisor Ajit Ghantker, Chief Refreee Noel Estebeiro, NIS Coach Irwin Cordo, Dr Deepak Mayenkar and others. Club Secretary Sandeep Heble welcomed and proposed the Vote of Thanks.
