IDEALISM AND REALISM The ghost of raging controversy about the ideal script for Konkani Language is best laid to rest. What is the ideal script for the language is debatable. If the script is not acceptable to the majority, then in a Democratic set up ,the decision of majority does prevail The minority has the say ,but it is the majority that has the way. If the language and the script is not acceptable to the people, all forced efforts will die a natural death due to its disuse, When the Education bill was passed ,.Assembly records will show that there was no debate .Even when two languages bill was passed as the mother tongue, there was no application of mind or even mild protest .It is mentioned umpteen times that the script of the language can be in any form and that it is neither material or imperative to promote a language The idea that devanagri script will alone integrate people is a fallacy .The script of compulsory Hindi language should serve the purpose Many a student have a broken career as failures in that subject is a hindrance to further educational advancement. The schools that opted for Konkani medium was due to the allurement of grants.It was my personal experience as the head of many DSE schools, that the expertise ,competence of those teaching in Konkani medium was far below expectations and it was tolerated with indifference as there was no alternative Being in charge of school complex, I spent two years training to read ,pronounce,explain ,teach English to Govt. teachers, wherein English was the Subject in std iii and Iv Their ability to teach it was simply appalling. Many a die hard states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal have consented to English medium of late. Even China has understood that that English language is advantageous, The teachers of Marathi are not willing to teach Konkani even when script is the same and there is lot of congruence between the two languages World is taking interest in learning Hindi, but not Konkani in Devanagri script Those opting for this medium remain isolated by and large. When the switch is made over to English medium ,those in charge of education will know the inherent difficulties that are to be surmounted Even staring with KG.primers and having separate divisions, special books of English to tide over this difficulty they cannot be assimilated with the others The educationist and not arm chair specialist, whose views are really material in this field A compulsory subject of Konkani can achieve the results Then there is another subject of Marathi, where most of the schools are being shut down for lack of numbers .Even where the medium is Konkani, discretely emphasis is laid to attain proficiency in EnglishThe Konkani language is today attained its respectful place , because the tiatrist used it Roman script One wonders the proliferation in numbers of the Bible in Devanagri script as compared to the roman scripts The primary English Medium schools should be banned as the state policy on the Medium. On the contrary they are flourishing with the blessings of the politicians, operating as islands of discrimination and vertically dividing the society into two classes of citizens Even the poorest amongst the poor pay through their nose to impart education in Enlish medium ,for the are confident of its benefit to employment avenues Academic, ideal thinking is not considering the ground realities and the wishe s of the people.Those who forcefully advocate Konkani as the medium have educated their own children without exceptions in English medium school.
