The Goa Government desires to review the fee structure of the Advocate General of Goa taking into consideration the fees being paid to the Advocate Generals of Maharastra, Gujarat and Karnataka.
The Law Department has informed under the Right to Information Act that information on the fee structure of the Advocate Generals of Maharastra and Gujarat has been received and that the information from Karnataka is awaited. Over the last two years three reminders having been sent to the Karnataka Law Secretary seeking information on their Advocate General’s fee structure. This seems to be a mere eyewash as the Chief Minister is bent on shielding and pampering Advocate General Subodh Kantak, The Goa Government is not serious to review the fee structure of the Advocate General and stop the exorbitant fees being paid to the Advocate General of Goa Mr. Subodh Kantak. Advocate General Subodh Kantak who was earlier being paid around 10 to 14 lakhs a month is now being paid Rs. 5 lakhs a month. Mr. Subodh Kantak who is not even a Senior Counsel is India’s highest paid Advocate General. The Advocate Generals of Maharastra, Karnataka and Gujarat on the average are never paid more that Rs 50,000 a month. Advocate Generals of Maharastra, Karnataka and Gujarat appear in the High Court only in constitutional and important matters but Mr. Subodh Kantak appears in all sorts of matters just because he is paid Rs 8000/- every time he stands up in the High Court. Mr. Subodh Kantak who has been paid over five crores over the last five years is earning more than that of the Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and even the President of India.
