My hats off to you dear Dona Carminha, for maintaining the spirit of village
jollity....cups bottom up to you.

The lovingly posted picture fetched back memories of my Mae, aunties and
a larged beevy of ladies assembling on the Calangute beach and taking on
the sea.

However, in the fifties, of which I speak, even Dona Carminha's very tasteful
costume, would have been considered quite a wee bit daring: then a costume
such as hers would have been completed with a jacket, the casaco do banho,
and the whole sartorial ensemble to be known as: Fato do Banho.

Believe me or not, some of the ladies, Lord bless their modest souls, would
effect
a semblance of gravata.

Eric, dear boy...the veritable paragon of the Goa nostalgica, perchance you
have a
picture of such a gathering, so redolant of propriety?

Chacha...who has seen it all...

>
> Hi pals,
>
> The monsoon feast of Sao Joao - St John - was celebrated throughout Goa,
> particularly in its coastal villages. I enjoy watching the colourful event
> at the Chinvar ward of Anjuna, where the fest is celebrated as a community
> event, in which at least people of three wards of the village come together.
> Generally, young men and children jump in the well traditionally for "Sao
> Joao" feast, but here in Anjuna, the highlight was Ms Carminha Mendonsa, an
> 80-year-old grandma, who plunged in the waters of the "zhor" once again.
