To play devil's advocate: just because some villages were better organised (or more networked) than others, it might give the impression that they were/are larger in number.
This might not be necessarily true. Are any statistics maintained in, say, countries like the UK, that give a person's region of origin? If so, would these show State-wise breakup? I'm not so much concerned about village backgrounds, ad State-background... for obvious reasons. As far as I know, the Government of India probably doesn't have accurate statistics of Indians located overseas in most parts of the globe, leave alone State-wise figures.
