Nelson,
Well, all the fuel storage tanks in the heart of Vasco, are a disaster waiting
to happen...I used to work for MPT and once as we walked out of the ore
handling plant, we could see a huge tank holding kerosene, overflowing!!...I
believe they were unloading a tanker at the berth and pumping it into this tank
and nobody knew that that it had filled up ....These tanks are massive and hold
thousands of liters of fuel....In hindsight, we should have run away from that
place.... surprisingly enough, we did not panic!!!
In recent years, people were found siphoning off petrol from the pipeline and
there was an explosion close to berth 9....At one point, these tanks were
located away from the heart of the town, but MPT has added many more berths
around this IOC facility ...Hopefully, the Fire Services are trained enough, to
meet any eventuality....
The events of last week don't inspire much confidence however!!
