Sharmad Mahajan won a double crown at the Shuttlers Club All Goa Major Ranking Badminton Tournament, held at Indoor Stadium, Campal-Panaji, winning the Junior Under 19 Boys events in both Singles and doubles. In the Singles, Sharmad beat Aniket Shenai 18-21, 21-16, 21-18 in a three set thriller. The top seed looked down and out, trailing 4-16 at one stage in the final set before he staged an amazing recovery to beat his error prone opponent. Later, Sharmad and Aniket teamed up to win the doubles event, beating Yash Angle and Sanath Kamat with a 21-17, 21-16 score line.
The Girls Under 19 event, being contested between two of Goa’s best young prospects, was expected to be a tough event could not live up to its expectations. Anura Prabhudesai played a near perfect match to beat her arch rival Pranjal Chimulkar, who appeared to be completely out of sorts and just could not get her game going. Anura won 21-10, 21-11. Top seed Govind Navelkar, who has been unbeaten on the Goan circuit for the last five years, continued his winning ways by registering a convincing 21-9, 21-12 win over second seed Floyd Araujo. Meanwhile, Vaman Fallary won yet again in the Veterans 45 plus circuit, scoring a comfortable 21-13, 21-6 win over Oscar Silveira to continue with his domination. In the Mens Doubles, top seeds Floyd Araujo and Navneet Nasnodkar played an aggressive game to smash their way to a 21-16, 21-18 win over Sunny Sawant and Sharmad Mahajan while Santosh Prabhudesai and Dr R Borkar beat Sudin Kuvelkar and Peter Telles 21-16, 21-18 to emerge Veterans 45 plus doubles champions. Dr Aditya Arya, Director General of Police, was the Chief Guest and distributed the prizes in the presence of Mr. Shailendra Singh (S.E, CPWD), Mr. Narahar Thakur(Secretary, GBA) and Mr. Gaurish Dhond(Treasurer, GBA). The Tournament was conducted by NIS Coaches Roy Athaide and Vinayak Kamat. Earlier, Mr. Richard De Souza (President, GBA) welcomed.
