With the barge owners and mining lobby deciding to take their battle to the
Panjim streets today, it will not be long before the government bows down to
their pressure. After all, greed determines need in this country. The excuse
usually given to justify continuance of harmful industry is the loss of jobs.
But if for some reason there is no more mining possible in Goa, will those
employed in the sector not look for other means to earn their livelihood? And
is it right to choke someone else's lungs and take someone else's life just
because I have to earn my living? If that is the reasoning then why does
society complain about prostitution and matka? Let those trades flourish. Let
society bear the consequences of the crime and disease that thrives along with
such trade. Where will all this talk and excuses of jobs and State revenue
stop? When will the concerns of environment and health of fellow human beings
be on top of any development agenda?
