Tujea bapichem kestaum in “Iron Lion Zion” Yes, I too heard this song and I know for sure Bob Marley knew Konkani and was in Goa, and I was not surprised. Listen to this ! How Bob Marley’s another hit song came to be known as “No Woman, No Cry” and it all started in Anjuna, Goa, India. This was the time when young Bob Marley visited Anjuna, Goa in the seventies. All Anjunites came to see this black legend in large numbers. It seems Idalina, a young deaf-mute girl from Anjuna who regularly supplied tea and local snacks to hippies on Friday’s Anjuna Flea Market asked an educated Anjunkarn Matilda, who this attractive young man was, in sign language. Matilda did not know how to explain the name “Bob Marley” to Idalina. So she opened her mouth wide and made a face like she was creaming her lungs out to express “Bob Marley” in Konkani deaf-mute language. Since that day as soon as she saw Bob Marley, Idalina started to scream loudly. Bob Marley couldn’t take it no more. He took out his pen and started writing the song titled. “No Woman, No Cry!” Yes, Bob Marley did know Konkani and “Tujea Bapaichem kestaum” was inserted in his English lyrics when Idalina’s Pai, Bostulo saw both Bob and Idalina entwined in each other’s arms on a Full Moon Friday Night’s Party at Anjuna Flea Market! And a week later while relaxing and smoking on the beach, when a local Reddo came lunging at him at full speed for no apparent reason ,"Buffalo Soldier" soon followed. And the rest is history!
