Respectful Madam,

Subject: Buffer Zones for Wild-life Sanctuaries and National Parks - Goa

Goemchea Rakhondarancho Awaz - GRA, an all Goa Civil-Society based Organization especially constituted to SAVE Goa from the policies of the Government of GOA that are destroying Goa and its natural resources, including its forests and wild life, do not agree to the reported proposal of the Government of Goa to reduce the 10 km buffer zone set by the MOEF, New Delhi around Wild-Life Sanctuaries and National Parks.

The Goa Government would be more than happy if there was no buffer zone at all and that it was free to give permissions to mine in the heart of Goa's forests, wild-life sanctuaries and national parks.

This organization and Goa itself will take to the streets if the 10 km buffer-zone is compromised by MOEF at the behest of Goa's irresponsible Government.

Thanking you for your anticipated co-operation and concern.

Yours faithfully,

Sd/-

Goa to plead for site-specific buffer zones.

PANJIM: Goa government is in the process of giving a detailed report to the Centre seeking to relax the 10 km buffer zone for wildlife sanctuaries and a national park. Forest Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues said that Adv General Subodh Kantak is preparing a detailed report which will be presented to Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF). 50%">The government is opposing the proposed blanket 10 kms buffer zone, mooted by Union Government. Rodrigues said that the state would plead for Sanctuary specific buffer zones, which should be determined considering the ecological sensitivity of the places. "Goa cannot implement a 10 km buffer zone," Rodrigues said adding that the impression is being created that state government wants zero km buffer zones all over. "That's not right. We want to preserve the environment. Wrong impression is being created by few people that we want only zero km as buffer zone," he said. Rodrigues, defending the Rajiv Yaduvanshi report on the buffer zone submitted in 2007, said that state government wanted site specific buffer zone. "Having a blanket buffer zone does not go well with Goa's situation," he said. The issue of the buffer zone has attained criticality as various mines may face closure if the 10 km buffer zone is declared. People dependent on mining had asked the state government to ensure that the buffer zone issue is settled, as it may spell doom for the industry.
