What Leroy writes about, the demolition of Professor Fanchu's house is very sad
indeed. But this is a lesson for us Goans. Unless historic houses are given
heritage conservation status, they are at risk of being lost to such callous
behaviour.

The village of Nuvem is contemplating demolising a Church whose history dates
back to the 1600 because they want extended capacity. A chapel has already been
demolised. Such is our ignorance about heritage conservation and the extreme
lethargy on the part of the government and even at times the Church authorities
is what is most galling.

There are many, many houses in Goa that deserve Heritage grade 1 status
otherwise they are will be lost forever as their owners, unable to cope with
maintaining them, sell them to the highest bidder. These houses can be sold
ofcourse but with the proviso that any changes to them should be
under guidelines approved by a Heritage Conservation Committee. (This is the
formula followed in the UK).

Best,
Selma
