Cine Times, Goa Times and Goan Sports Weekly!- Goan Konkani
newspapers from Bombay in the 70s
I just read CINE TIMES: A SMALL, VERY USEFUL LINK IN A BIG CITY on goanet, and
all those memories of yesteryear from Bombay came back to me in a flashback!
The year was 1970 and I had just arrived in Bombay from Goa after I
graduated (B.Sc.)and the first thing I did was to visit Maidan-Cross,
Dhobitalao, Metro Cinema and as I was just walking along the by-lanes of
Dhobitalao
looking for some sorpatel in Goan restaurants, I chanced upon this printing
press of Cine Times. I ventured inside and met the Editor – Enclidas De Elly
and since then we became good friends. I used to visit him often taking my
poems and articles which he would publish and I would feel so proud at seeing
my manuscript published in print form.
This was the beginning of my tryst with Konkani writing in the prime of my
life. Next I met the Editor of Goa Times, Dr. Simon
Fernandes, whom I used to visit weekly at his dispensary in Chandanwaddy. It is
at this time that there was so much criticism and rebuttals on Goa Times
against the newly announced Editor of Chowgule’s Konkani Daily, “Uzzvadd” and
freedom-fighter , Shri Evagrio George in
Goa. Dr. Simon accused Evagrio George for selling out his Goan soul to a
Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Miner/capitalist
Chowgule, whose main goal was to merge (vilin) Goa with Maharashtra, and he was
afraid Evagrio George would help Goa eventually join Maharashtra. Such were
the politics of those days and you
had to read Uzvadd and Goa Times to compare notes.
Later I came in contact with the Editor, Mr. D’Cruz of the newly formed Goan
Sports Weekly from
Bombay, for which I contributed some articles too, including articles on
Lorna(after
her great hit ‘Um, dois, tres,... Nachoiea kumpasar with Chris Perry) and
Remo(Gay Caballeros?) long before they
were the household word in those days.
Yes, it’s all coming back to me now and I love those lingering
memories, even though all these newspapers from Bombay are sadly no more!
