Nehru Yuvak Kendra and NSS force should be trained in Disaster Management

501 Nehru Yuvak Kendras, 28 Zonal offices, 1.25 lakh village based youth force with 37 lakh volunteers throughout the country is a big youth force which is engaged in nation building, said Mr Shantaram Naik M.P. and Secretary AICC at Margao today, and added that, in Goa, the force should be trained in disaster management.

Mr Naik said, who was inaugurating a seminar on role of Youth in nation building organized by Nehru Yuvak Kendra, South Goa, further said that Goa may have to face natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunami, floods, landslides in near future, and therefore NYK force as also volunteers of National Service Scheme volunteers should be trained to meet such situations.

Mr Naik said that National Service Scheme which was launched in 1969, in the Gandhi Centenary Year, has now 32 lakh students on their roll and, it is operationalised through 251 universities and 14698 colleges and schools.

Mr Naik who further said that the force can be utilized in voters awareness programme under which people can be made to realize importance of right to vote and encourage them to exercise the same without fear or favour and, without accepting doles offered by political parties or individuals.

Mr Naik said that 34% of our population consists of youth force and history shows that youngsters like Bhagatsingh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Chandrashekhar Azad, Mangal Pande, Zahansi ki Rani changed the course of the history.

Even in Goa, those freedom fighters who left their families and moved endlessly in jungles were all youth.

We, as a nation, have not totally succeeded in molding our youth to be perfect in decision making process and, as a result our young generation can easily be carried away. It takes years for government or other agencies to train youth in a particular direction but it hardly takes 24 hours for a TV Channel to take them in other direction, Mr Naik said.

Freedom fighters Mrs Shashila Almeida Hodarkar, Shri Vasant Raikar, Shri Ronaldo Coutinho, Shri Waman Prabhu Gaonkar and Shri Anthony Fernandes were at the hands of Mr Naik.

At the outset Shri Shirish Lawande gave welcome address and thanked Mr Naik for always responding to the call of NYK.

Zonal Officer of NYK Shri S.N. Sharma also addressed the gathering.
