Every year about this time we get to witness the ritual of blaming others for
our problems and the casting of slurs against India and other Indians. These
tired old useless rants are invariably great hits with a significant proportion
of the readership, presumably because of ignorance, prejudice or false sense of
pride. Neither the factual nor the counter-factual assumption for the argument
that we would be better off as an independent enclave in India or as a colony
of a foreign country has any basis in reality. Reality for most Goans is that
in most respects as they relate to individual lives we are better off today
than we were 50 years ago. Reality also is that it is we who have governed
ourselves for the last 48 years, and are primarily responsible for all the
moral, social and environmental problems that we have created in Goa.
