Portugal Restricts Indians

LONDON (Reuters) — Portugal rounded up Indians in its overseas territories Monday, allegedly for their own protection in the wake of the Indian invasion of the Portuguese territory of Goa on India's west coast.

The biggest group interned was in Mozambique, Portuguese East Africa, where there is a large concentration of Indian traders.

The number of Indians rounded up there was estimated to be about 12,000.

In addition, about 50 Indians living in the tiny Portuguese territory of Macao on the coast of China were rounded up.

The Governor - General of Mozambique, Rear - Admiral Sarmento Rodrigues, broadcast an appeal to the population not to take reprisals against Indians in the territory for the attack on Goa.

Also in London, Portugal's Foreign' Minister Alberto Nogueira said his country is pre-pared to negotiate with India al-though Portuguese troops are "fighting on" in Goa.
