165 aspirants lay claim for Cong tickets
Sons, daughters, wives of MLAs add up the numbers

PANJIM: On the last day for filing of applications by Congressmen, Congress Party Tuesday received 165 applications from ticket aspirants for the Assembly elections. Not only Congress MLAs sitting on the fringers, but also sons, daughters and wives of some Congress MLAs submitted their applications with a desire to contest ensuing Assembly election, on Congress ticket.

Valanka Alemao, daughter of PWD Minister Churchill Alemao submitted her application wanting to contest from Benaulim.

Yuri Alemao, son of Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao too has submitted his application on the last day. Yuri Alemao wants to contest from Sanguem constituency.

Both new aspirants from Alemao household were rumoured to be trying for NCP ticket. Jennifer Monserrate who contested as an independent against St Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes, in 2007 assembly election, also submitted her application form. It was not known whether she wants to contest from St Cruz or from Taleigao, the constituency which is represented by her husband Atanasio Monserrate, who wants to move his turf to St Cruz this time around.

Ritesh Naik, elder son of Home Minister Ravi Naik has submitted application form desiring to contest from Madkaim constituency which is currently, being represented by MGP MLA Sudin Dhavlikar.

Home Minister’s younger son Roy Naik is planning to contest from Mayem.

Shalom Sardinha, son of South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha also wants to contest election and filed his application for Curtorim constituency. The constituency is currently represented by Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourence.

However, it was not known if Divya Rane, wife of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has submitted her application form. Besides Rajesh Patnekar, Dayanand Sopte and others aspirants who submitted their applications Tuesday, Tulio D’Souza who has staked claims for Saligao constituency while Ashish Shirodkar has filled his applications for candidacy from Mapusa constituency.

Highest number of applications was received for Mormugao constituency, followed by Canacona eleven and Cuncolim three.

The applications will be scrutinized on December 30 before being forwarded to party’s central election committee. As declared by the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee ( GPCC) President Subhash Shirodkar on Monday, they will finalize the candidates after January 15.
