Subject: [Goanet] Son'varachim Sungttam: Konknni Zannar-Padri Vasco Do Rego,
S.J.

Rev. Fr. Vasco Rego was the "Rector" of the Loyola High School boarding in the
late 60's. He was a very strict disciplinarian and always had the stick called
"palmator" (a foot long stick with a circular head with a few holes at one end)
in his cassock's long pocket. I did receive the severity of that "palmator" on
my palms, a few times when ever caught at mischief, but it was only at that
moment and he would forget about it a few moments later.

Although most of our priests and teachers wanted us to speak in English which
was a struggle for most of us, Rev. Fr. Rego always made sure we spoke in
Konkani in his presence; he really loved Konkani even though he had very good
authority our English. He had this habit of coming slowly and pinching our arms
from behind and if we said "avois" he would ask "tuka avoi asa bapui nam re" so
every time he pinched us we use to say "bapuis". I received my first Holy
Communion at Loyola from him and I was taught my catechism in Konkani under his
instructions.

During his time at Loyola, he taught us to sing the "Litany" in Konkani and
even after he was transferred, we still sang the "Litany" every Saturday after
The Holy Rosary. He had a voice that could outdo any of today's professional
singers, there was power and melody and indeed very pleasing to the ear. It was
amazing to watch him train our choir. When ever he celebrated mass it was
always in Konkani and we use to love to hear him preach. He was found of
children and would always guide and advise us and when needed did not spare the
"palmator".

Nearly twenty five years later I met him at Old Goa when he was incharge of the
Basilica, he had become old but still had that strong powerful voice, I went
and met him after the mass, my family was with me, he did not recognize me at
first but then when I told him that I was from Cabo-de-Rama, he remembered,
because he use to call me Cabo de Ram. He was happy to meet me and my kids and
blessed them.

Does anyone know where he resides at the moment ? He should be close to 90's by
now, would love to visit him.
