ANDRE v/s PETROMAXES In olden days in Goa, outdoor wedding receptions were judged more by the number of petromaxes in the pandals, than by the number of music makers in the band. Andre Dias was one of the players in a band this side of Sal. His passion was to compete with petromaxes, rather than make music to ears. Reason: the band of petromaxes produced more sound than light, and that made Andre blow his saxophone a decibel louder. He went out of tune in the process, but he was out to outshine those light makers. He played music all of a decade in the 50's. He blew into the horn's mouthpiece so hard that the key-holes got choked by saliva. As a result he had to blow still harder. Had it not been for the world famous 'Henri Selmer' brand, Andre's saxophone couldn't have survived his decade-long competition with petromaxes and in fact, not have outlived Andre himself. While on the topic of Petromax, I understand that a desi company has 'reinvented' the design and is making it for local consumption. It still might have some use in rural India but it is possible that with the availability of inexpensive solar technology, the Petromax may be on its way out. As far as the Alladin lamps are concerned, the cost factor was and is a likely point against their general use. Besides, with the advent of the Alibaba guys, where is the time for the Alladin lamps?
