Very good address by Eunice de Souza. She said "the late Santan Rodrigues, Melanie Silgardo, and Raul da Gama Rose played an important role in poetry in English in the 1970s." Yeah, it was fun time then in Mumbai. I think Santan and Melanie edited a periodical called Kavi. I knew Santan very well from his starting job in the low ranks of Central Bank to his rising up as PRO and later moving on to other jobs. It's been two years since Santan passed away. He also wrote occasionally for Goa Today.
Those where the days when poets like Nissim Ezekiel and Kamala Das were the guiding spirits of young poets. I remember that Kamla Das used to hold meetings at her place and Santan often asked me to attend them. I never did. Wish to know what's the state of current Goan poetry in English? Eugene Correia
