Eugene:
re: Liberating ourselves from within
This is an excellent piece of writing.
"The Supreme Court's intervention and the Goa government's tough stand should
ensure that when mining resumes it would be transparent and conducive to good
practices."
Let us hope so.
"Political and social activism has been sober, unlike the violent ones in other
states. No doubt some groups have sprouted on the bogey of Goan identity
getting consumed in the growing number of "outsiders" in the state, one need
not be overly alarmed, though careful. It's in the hands of Goans how to
protect and how to preserve Goan heritage, culture and identity against all
pressures from outside forces. None can rob oneself of his or her intrinsic
cultural and social bearings. However, it cannot be denied that at the rate the
in-migration of people from other states taking place is going to upset the
numerical balance of Goans against "outsiders". One of the effects of these
waves of in-migration is the the "slumification" of Goa. A casual look at the
hilltops near the cities and the shanties in many villages raises the ghost of
Goa losing its charm and its natural beauty, if not already lost.
Thebeachfronts are already showing signs of gradual decline into decadence. The
earlier the "slumification" and the loss of Goa's pristine beaches is arrested
the better it would be in saving Goa's magnetic pull for both domestic and
foreign tourists. After all, tourism is the second line of defence in Goa's
economic outlay."

Very true.
As for "in-migration", the "slumification" needs to be controlled. We saw a
similar parallel play itself out in the recent US presidential election where
the Latinos - many who earlier entered the USA illegally - apparently were
instrumental in putting Obama back in power. The Latinos are an up and coming
hard working community. The changing face of America can only be a good thing.
However, the traditionalists decried the "old America of Chevrolet and apple
pie" disappearing.
New immigration has always proved invigorating in the long run.
