"A cursory opening of the Mid-day Times shows a horrendous number if incidents of violence against women. Rapes, abduction, blackmail sexting, murders and acid throwing sometimes by close kin is too common. Granted that Bombay is a city of 20 million people, but the numbers and the types of aggression against people unable to defend themselves is appalling. Have Indian men learned nothing or is societal permissiveness of such events too ingrained for predators to change." COMMENT: Not very sure what is happening in India and why? It is possible that the rape-problems were always there but that now the internet has made it possible for such occurrences to be made know more than antes. It is also possible that the 'genteel' folk who once 'had the mike' and spoke in polite Urdu, Marathi, English and (in Goa's case) Konkani and Portuguese have been displaced by the rough cut heroes, other foul mouthed roughnecks and politicians (+ Hacktivists). My personal impression (hope) is that the vast majority of Indians are polite, hard working and good people. I am sure that they too are disgusted by these shameful acts of ignorant hate and brute exercise of power by those who are able to, but are just too helpless to do anything about it. Cannot explain the prevalence of gang rape. Impossible that it is related to sexual depravity alone. It is just extra sick. jc
