My experiences say that, while the group indicated in the passwd file has an effect, there is an additional effect to adding the user to that group in the 'group' file. I think it had something to do with `chgrp` being allowed to work... unfortunately I'm not being able to reproduce any differences right now, so maybe I was confused?
