I don't know of any rule that says that you have to enter preliminary
solutions, or any solutions at all if you choose not to. I, personally,
take that to the opposite extreme, entering my 600-1000+ non-functional
solutions this time, and every stroke off last time.
I'm sub-average in the beginners category, but I feel like any arbitrary
promotion turns the beginners category into a limbo contest, however if
we are going to have one, I'll nominate that people with negative
y-indices are the ones who get promoted.
