Not sure if the solution I applied is acceptable to you. I've
integrated GSA and AJAX/REST API, using perl and REST::Google::Search
module.

Basically, I've built a wrapper for passing requests to and fetching
results from GSA, and then added the code to connect to Google public
search for requests beyond my GSA-indexed web space. With such a
solution, I have a full freedom in consistently presenting result sets
through all my web sites, no matter where results came from (GSA or
AJAX/REST API).

The project is featured at:

http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/

(Open: Community -> Featured Projects. My project is the first one,
under 'Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.)

Here are some web sites serviced by my interface:

http://beef.unl.edu
http://ianrnews.unl.edu
http://marketjournal.unl.edu
http://agalmanac.unl.edu
http://cropwatch.unl.edu

The web sites above illustrate usage of the same set of CSS classes
through multiple sites.
