Google's servers are designed to handle a fairly significant load. In fact, at Google I/O last week, they revealed that their servers are processing upwards of 4 billion requests related to their various APIs on any given day. So I don't think the problem is that you're overwhelming the server. Rather, it would be good to know what service you are trying to use. For instance, the Maps API's geocoder service has a rate limit of 15,000 queries per IP per day. While they will allow small bursts, this is quota is actually prorated, meaning that they actually expect you to make no more than 1 geocode request per about 6 seconds. If you exceed the limit, the service returns a 620 error, saying that the service is unavailable.
