I'm not google guy but in my opinion the purpose of GAE solution is to give access to google infrastructure and google clustered environment. It is not just another database or J2EE server. But the bad news is that it comes with a lot of limitations. JPA/JDO implementation is regarded as a convenient way for accessing data in Java, not as a competitor for Hibernate. So I don't expect Hibernate or SQL being in the roadmap.
