I have been investigating various Server-Side JavaScript platforms for
a while. Thought I will share the results...
Well, since AppJet is gone, we have left with three choices for Server-
Side JavaScript today:

1) Aptana Jaxer. It seems very cool [http://ejohn.org/blog/server-side-
javascript-with-jaxer/]. But you have to use Aptana Cloud, which is
very slow and expensive (see their support forum). Of course, because
it's open source, you can host it in on your own server. Or, if you
want a cloud, you can host it in on EC2. But it's lots of
configuration, and still may cost you more at the end.

2) JoyEnt Smart Cloud. JoyEnt Smart Platform is new and cool and says
that it's the future of cloud computing. It's open source. It holds a
great promise, which I am super enthusiastic about. But it would be
very hard, if not impossible, for JoyEnt to beat Google App Engine in
price and performance. It feels really slow compared to App Engine:
200-400ms vs 20-40ms response time; 25 vs 13 hops in traceroute; 0 vs
0-20% packet loss.

3) Google AppEngine with Rhino. Though it needs some configuration at
the beginning [http://dev.helma.org/ng/Running+Rhino+and+Helma+NG+on
+Google+App+Engine], but when you go through that, you get a pretty
decent server-side JavaScript platform. You get true cloud, Google
scalability and performance. You are free to start and get very
flexible pricing as you get bigger.

Resume: I really wanted to stick with JoyEnt Smart Platform, and I was
skeptical about Server-Side JavaScript on Google App Engine at first.
But after playing with both of them for a while, I think that GAE may
be a lot better choice at the moment. If only someone could port
JoyEnt Smart Cloud or Jaxer to Google App Engine, it would make an
awesome platform for server-side javascript.
