One datacenter - occasionally switches. However depending on location
might be routed via an alternate datacenter. So your traffic is routed
to the nearest datacenter, and then sent onwards to the appengine
datacenter on Googles internal network

Apparently this doesn't happen. But potentially could be edge cached.

ghs is a proxy of a number of different applications - including
appengine, but also blogspot and some Apps stuff like Sites. One that
knows how to deal with custom domains

appspot is a dedicated appengine infrastructure. (and so can more
directly follow where appengine is currently hosted)
